James Cameron, the director of “Titanic,” says that it is “astonishing” how similar the Titanic disaster and submersible deaths are.
The five passengers on board the “Titan” were declared dead by OceanGate on Thursday.
James Cameron is responding to the five Titan passengers’ alleged deaths.
The Titanic movie’s director stated on Thursday that even before to Sunday’s voyage, the diving community was “deeply concerned” about the submersible’s safety.
“Several top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified,” he said.
Cameron said he was compelled to draw comparisons between the presumptive calamity and the Titanic after reports that wreckage from the Titan was found, indicating that the crew inside was dead.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result,” he said.
“For us, it’s a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded,” the film maker surmised. “To take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”
The 68-year-old Cameron is an experienced diver who has made 33 trips to the ship’s wreckage in his lifetime.
The five passengers on board a missing submersible, which lost touch with their main ship less than two hours into the eight-hour trip, were confirmed dead on Thursday afternoon by OceanGate.
According to the company’s statement, its CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet all unfortunately passed away.
“These men were genuine explorers who shared a sense of adventure and a fierce enthusiasm for exploring and preserving the waters across the world. During this terrible moment, our prayers and thoughts are with these five people and every one of their families. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew,” the statement continued.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported in a press conference on Thursday that a ROV has located debris on the ocean below 1,600 feet from the site of the Titanic crash.
How similar the Titanic disaster and submersible deaths are.
According to the Coast Guard, the debris they uncovered was consistent with the ‘Titan’ chamber’s catastrophic loss of pressure.
“The company statement stated, “This is a very sad moment for our committed personnel who are worn out and hurting sincerely over this loss. “The whole OceanGate family is incredibly appreciative to all of the men and women from many worldwide organizations that expedited numerous resources and worked so incredibly hard on our endeavor.”
“We value their dedication to helping us discover these five explorers and their day and night efforts to help our crew and their families. The statement added, “This is a very sad time for the whole exploration community and for each and every family member of those lost at sea. “We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.”
