Actress Salma Hayek is one of the most popular Mexican actress in Hollywood. She earned the most popularity for her performance in the 2002 movie Frida, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She won the Woman of the Year award from Glamour magazine in 2001, and in 2005, Time Magazine named her one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics.”
Salma is from a well-known Veracruz family of Spanish and Lebanese descent. She was brought up as a Roman Catholic and later attended a boarding school in the United States, where she was diagnosed with dyslexia. Salma went on to study international relations at the Universidad Iberomericanan in Mexico City. Her first name Salma is take from Arabic language which means “peace”.
Salma didn’t start her acting career until she was 23 years old, when she was cast in Teresa, a popular Mexican TV show. She became an overnight superstar in Mexico, and five years later she acted in the most award-winning movie in Mexican history, El Callejon de los Milagros. Salma relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 25, where she began her Hollywood career.
In the 1995 movie Desperado, directed by Robert Rodriguez, Salma featured opposite Antonio Banderas. Salma received a nomination for best supporting actress for the movie, which was a huge success. Her career was set off by this, and over the following ten years, she appeared in over 25 movies, including Fools Rush In (1997), Wild Wild West (1999), and Frida (2002). Salma is wed to French millionaire Francois Pinault, with whom she has a daughter named Valentina. Salma actively supports philanthropic groups that promote women’s rights in her personal life.
